Careers in Engineering

Purpose

Engineering is a small word encompassing an entire career cluster.  There are as many job descriptions as there are people who hold them.  Engineers are involved in pure research, managing jobs and people, design, manufacturing, and planning.  Some have careers in places you would never expect.  Disney World has an extensive collection of different kinds of engineers.  Movie animation, agriculture, medicine, clothing, household products and just about any product you can think of are all places where engineers are employed.

Procedure

1.      Students will conduct research about the area of Engineering they have chosen. This research is to include:

·         Description of the field (Field Report)

·         Areas of specialization

·         Job prospects

·         Where this type of engineer might work

·         Expected salary ranges

·         Duties and responsibilities of this type of engineer

·         College preparation needed

·         Sample listing of courses from an established university or college which offers this as a major

·         Courses needed in high school to attend university

2.      Choose one of the options below:

·        Students will select an engineer to job shadow.  It may be a person you or your parents know or someone set up by Mrs. Donnan.  Your job shadowing experience is a legal excuse from school.  You must complete the job shadowing by October 21, 2005.  Students will call and or write to a professional who is working in the engineering field being researched to set-up a job shadowing experience and an interview.  Pictures from the job shadowing must be included in the PowerPoint presentation.

OR

·        Students will use the internet and Guidance Office resources to research 3 colleges that offer this type of Engineering Major.  You will compare the colleges on 5-7 criteria of your choosing (ex. Cost, location, sports, etc.) Then choose your “#1 school” and research the courses and course descriptions to major in this field of Engineering at this college.

3.      Students will create a written report following the basic outline given in the Written Report Format. This report is to include:

·         Title Page

·         Table of Contents

·         Abstract of the Report –  Field Report

·         Written copy of the interview which includes person being interviewed, the questions asked and responses given and a summary of the job shadowing experience

                                          OR

·         College comparison study and list of College courses needed and the course descriptions

·         Summary of the report

·         Citations

4.      Students will create a PowerPoint presentation that summarizes the information researched.

5.      Students will give a 8-10 minute oral presentation to the class.
