JOSEPH
HENRY POST OFFICE
This student-run post office has just reopened for its sixth year of
operation. In 2005–06, over 4,000 letters were written,
mailed and received by students and staff alike. There were 87
volunteer student employees last year that included postmasters,
assistant postmasters, nixie clerks, sorters, facers and carriers. The Student Council and PTSA have provided financial support over the
years to help purchase needed supplies. Parents have also been
very generous through their own donations. This is also the third
year that the NYS Correctional Officers and Police Benevolent
Association have sponsored this program. Last year they donated
$500 to the Galway Food Pantry on behalf of our school. Every time
a letter is mailed, they donate $.10 to the pantry. Ms. Lori Liebert,
a faculty member and “Joseph Henry Day” Committee member,
noted at June 2001's assembly that the NYS Legislative Resolution
honoring Albert Moyer’s biographical book regarding Joseph Henry was
presented to the Joseph Henry Elementary Student Council. The
resolution was then passed through the Joseph Henry Post Office to
receive the postmark before it was mailed to his widow, Mrs. Moyer.
