LITERARY DEVICES

Five elements essential to fiction are plot, setting, characterization, theme, point-of-view, conflict and dialogue.

 

The following chart details techniques/devices used to enhance fiction.

 

Symbolism Symbolism is used to give significance to an object that represents another object, person or theme in a novel/short story.
Imagery Imagery is using vivid language to appeal to one or more of the five senses.
Flashback Flashback is when a scene from the past is inserted into the course of a narrative.  It is not enough to just mention the event; the action and dialogue need to be included in the plot.
Dramatic Irony Dramatic irony is when the reader  knows more information than one or more of the characters.
Situational Irony Situational irony occurs when the opposite of what a reader or character expects to happen occurs.
Foreshadowing Foreshadowing is when there are clues/hints of what is to come in the plot.
