To Kill a Mockingbird:  In-class Essay

Directions:  Write an essay that discusses why Atticus Finch is a person worth knowing.  Use the text of Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird to support your position.  This essay will be completed in class over two class periods.

Your Task: 

After you have completed reading Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird, write a unified essay that develops the central idea of why Atticus Finch is a person worth knowing.   In your essay, support your ideas with direct references to the text (quotes). Using evidence from the text, develop your controlling idea and show how Harper Lee uses specific literary elements or techniques to convey that idea.

            Be sure to

  • Use ideas from the text to establish a controlling idea about why Atticus Finch is a character worth knowing
  • Show how Atticus’s dealings with different characters bring out different aspects of his character
  • Show how different events and situations bring out different aspects of  Atticus
  • Show how what other characters say about him reveal different aspects of his  character
  • Use specific and relevant evidence (quotes) from Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird  to develop your controlling idea
  • Show how Harper Lee uses specific literary elements (for example: characterization, setting) or techniques (for example: symbolism, irony, dialogue) to convey the controlling idea

  • Follow the conventions of standard written English
