English 9 - Mr. Ubriaco

You don't have to burn books to destroy a culture.
Just get people to stop reading them.

I-Search Paper

Directions:  An I-search paper is a non-traditional research paper.  In the I-Search paper you need to research a topic that is of interest to you.  You get to decide on the scope of your research.  You create a question/topic and then try to answer it via research, interviews, and writing of the paper. Similar to a traditional research paper, you need to document your sources, ie: citations & bibliography.  Unlike a traditional research paper, in an I-Search paper you also write about the process you go through as you research, revise, proofread, and finish your paper. You can be drafting your paper as you proceed with your research rather than waiting until you have all the information you need before deciding upon what you will actually write.  It also means that you can tell the reader (me) of your frustrations as you underwent your research and writing.

Your Task:

You will research two to three places from anywhere in the universe that you are interested in visiting.  The places you choose must have importance to you.  They may be places you are interested in due to the following:  mystery, heritage, personal growth, personal interests, etc.  You are not allowed to choose a place because it sounds fun and relaxing (beware Caribbean).  You are to choose a place where you can challenge yourself and grow.  You will then write an I-Search paper that chronicles your search and discoveries.  Your paper must include citations and a bibliography.

Guidelines:

            Be sure to

  • Follow the guidelines and requirements of an I-Search Paper
  • Choose places that will challenge you to grow
  • Research from the required sources
  • Include citations and bibliography
  • Include an interview
  • The paper must be 4 to 7 pages long (double spaced, 12 point, Palatino)
  • Organize your ideas in a logical and coherent manner
  • Use language that communicates ideas effectively
  • Follow the conventions of standard written English
