National Junior Honor Society

Box-a-thon

In June students raised awareness for the homeless in Saratoga County, students asked for pledges to raise money for the Shelters of Saratoga as they spend time in a box.

Over $1300 was raised!

Galway Middle School’s National Junior Honor Society sponsored a Box-a-thon on Saturday, June 11th in which $1,355 was raised through pledge money.  The proceeds will benefit Shelters of Saratoga, a homeless shelter located in Saratoga Springs.

During the Box-a-thon, middle school students were asked to donate their time and stay in a box for four hours.  The Junior Honor Society provided activities to entertain the Box-a-thoners, including a movie, games and even a video game tournament. Lunch was provided along with prizes. Eighth-grader, Jessica Staskowski, was awarded the top prize for bringing the most pledge money.  Special thanks should go to Emerald Cinemas and Wal-Mart of Amsterdam for donating prizes.

This was one of many community service projects that the Galway Middle School’s students have participated in.  Junior Honor Society students became interested in helping the non-profit Shelters of Saratoga after visiting the homeless shelter. They were impressed with the shelter’s goal of re-establishing the homeless back into the community.  The students wanted to bring awareness to all of the middle school students since at times people may have preconceived notions concerning the reasons of homelessness and may not be aware of the many expenses that the shelter has since it is run on grants and donations.

If you have any ideas or see a need that the NJHS could sponsor for the entire community please contact Carrie Herron.
