National Junior Honor Society

Membership Requirements

History

There are chapters in more than 5,000 middle level schools across the nation.  Each of the National Junior Honor Society Chapters unite in the common goal of creating enthusiasm for scholarship, a desire to render service, promotion of leadership, and the development of good character and citizenship.  Each member excels in these five above ideals and these ideals are the basis for selection into the National Junior Honor Society.

Membership

Membership in the National Junior Honor Society is considered on honor.

8th grade candidates: must have a cumulative average of at least an 89.5 of their prior 2.5 years; grades from all 4 quarters of 6th, 4 quarters from 7th grade and 1st semester of 8th.

Service to the Community

Galway Middle School NJHS will be involved in one or more service projects during the school year.  Each member will be asked to be involved in an individual service project as well.  Members who’s “Service Card” is completed by the end of the school year will be able to participate in the chapter’s end of the year field trip.

Five Qualities of Membership

Membership is an honor bestowed upon a student.  Selection for membership is by majority vote of the faculty council and is based on outstanding scholarship, character, leadership, service and citizenship.

v     Scholarship- a commitment to learning and charge to continually expand their world through opportunities inherent in scholarship

v     Service- a willingness to volunteer and work for the benefit of those in need without compensation or recognition

v     Leadership- an important influence in our school community, self-confidence to go forward when others hesitate

v     Citizenship- the responsibility to live up to the laws and guidelines that the founders of our country have given us

v   Character- a force within each individual which distinguishes that person from others as they display making the right choices daily
