Let's get some bright ideas going

Your project is:

Floor Plan Project

The purpose of this project is to use your knowledge of scale drawings to create a floor plan of our math classroom.

This project is due:  Friday, March 24, 2005. No late assignments will be accepted due to Easter vacation.

A floor plan is an overhead view of a room that shows the room’s objects smaller.  You must use a scale.  When you use graph paper as the room you set up the scale so that  1 box = _____ amount. For example, you could say 1  box    = 1 ft  or 1 box   = 6 inches.

To decide your scale you need to look at your real measurements.  Let’s say the room measures 24 feet by 50 feet.  You then look to see how many blocks are on the paper and decide how many you need to use. Let’s say there are 10 boxes across the page, so we would make 1 box = 5 feet OR 1 box = 3 feet.  Then make sure that scale fits going up the page. Let’s say that going up the page there are 25 boxes.  Both scales fit, but using the 1 box= 3 feet allows us to use more of the paper.

You are going to do a floor plan of a math classroom using our room as a guide. Round to the nearest half-foot.     (1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and so forth)   Measure from a top view only.

The scale you will use is  _______________________.

You must include the following in your classroom.  You can arrange it any way you like keeping to the specifications below. Use a ruler!!!!!!!!!!!!

ü      You must have at least 2 feet of space between all objects for a walkway, unless you are grouping desks or tables.  If you groups desks or tables, draw them separately, but place them next to each other. Do not forget to show the door on the plan.

ü      You must use at least:

o       1 teacher desk

o       16 student desks

o       1 file cabinet

o       2 computer desk

o       2 tables

ü      1 computer must be near Mrs. Herron’s desk

ü      2 student desks must be next to each other near a file cabinet

ü      Nothing can block the door

ü      1 student desk must be to the right of the door

ü      No more than 3 student desks may be touching

ü      You must make an outline to show the room’s borders

Extra credit: for 20 bonus points, make another floor plan using the same specifications yet is different!

You may want to cut out shapes and move them around until you find a design you like, or you can draw in pencil and then neatly erase.

Checklist of things to hand in:

q      Chart filled out according to your own scale

q       1 floor plan with all the specifications assigned
