- Glad there are a few people around yet from the class of 1957. I'll give
you a quick rundown of what I have been doing. Lived in Germany
after I got out of the Army in 1964. Came back to the States and went to SU at
night studying photojournalism while working as the lead micro-electronics
designer on the NASA 2 Project. Met my wife Betsy (we got married in
Switzerland) and we took off for Europe in 1968. We both worked for a
nightclub in Germany and spent some time in Africa. Came back to the States in
1970 and worked some short-term micro-electronics contracts for aerospace
firms while freelance writing for a number of magazines and newspapers. Was a
stringer for the Arts and Leisure Section of the Sunday New York Times. Was
field-editor for Off Road Magazine and also wrote for all the other fourwheel
drive magazines when we took off for Africa in 1973. Got into a shipwreck on
the way to Africa when a Liberian tanker hit us broadside, but we managed to
limp in to Casablanca. Crossed the Sahara Desert on the longest trail (the
Tanezrouft) to the Niger River near Timbuktu. Spent about 2 years abroad and
came back to the States in 1975. Did some writing and photography (for about
30 magazines and newspapers) and worked short-term contracts in
micro-electronics. There are now two Bureau of Land Management sites
describing the latest National Monuments located in Arizona and they give as
reference my book (published in 1973) "Retracing The Butterfield Overland
Trail Through Arizona." Went to Alaska and the Yukon Territory in 1978 where I
discovered and staked a little valley with gold in it in the middle of the
Klondike. We have a great little cabin built into the mountainside and have
been there for 26 years. Don't stay there in the winter now as getting to old
to be on a dogsled at 60 below zero. Might be on Discovery Channel later next
year as they may be coming up to our valley as we have lots of woolly mammoth
bones there. If any of you are up that way, stop in and see us. Just give me
an email and I will give you the directions.
