S.O.S ~ Support Our School

Success is a science, if you have the conditions, you get the result.
~Oscar Wilde

S.O.S. is a community driven initiative to support and sustain Academic Programs, Enrichment, and Extra-Curricular offerings within Galway Central School through Grants, Charitable Giving, and Volunteerism.

PARTNERSHIP:

The Galway Central School District is partnering with the Community Foundation of the Greater Capital Region (CFGCR) to help support the fund development efforts of S.O.S.  Two Funds are being established, the Galway SOS Annual Fund and the Galway SOS Endowment Fund. Each fund has the ability to meet the wishes of the donor while supporting the needs of the the GCSD. The CFGCR will act as the 501(c)3 for the purpose of receiving gifts and funds raised though S.O.S efforts.

THE PURPOSE OF S.O.S. IS TO:

  • Keep the programs we want for our kids.
  • Strengthen the Galway community through partnership.
  • Help Galway Central School continue to offer an excellent educational program in
    tough budget times.
S.O.S. 2011 - 12 FUNDRAISING GOALS:
  • Secure Grant Funding for 2012/13 and 2013/14 school years.
  • Annual Fund/Endowment Development to provide support for academic programs
at-risk during the next budget cycle. May include, but not limited to:

BOCES, HS Academic/Fine Arts Electives, Business Classes, Arts in Education,
Science and Technology, Class Activities and Clubs.

S.O.S.
WILL:

  • Create revenue for Galway Central School, outside of local taxes and
traditional State and Federal funding, through charitable giving.
  • Generate school financial stability and sustainability.
  • Develop funds for both short-term and long-term support.
  • Provide options for giving and choice in support.
  • Utilize volunteers as much as possible to both raise funds and to save money.

THE NEED FOR S.O.S.:

  • $1,000,000 reduction in state aid.
  • $1,000,000+ increase in fixed costs that are difficult, if not impossible, to change
    (health care, retirement systems, FICA).
  • $463,981 (2.6% percent) reduction in the Galway Central School District’s operating
budget for the 2011/12 school year, resulting in a reduction of over 20 faculty
    and staff members.
  • property tax limit passed in June, 2011.
  • Indications are that the budget gap will continue to grow.
