Summer Programs

Summer Programs

As a reminder, RPI is re-launching (after the pandemic hiatus) several exciting STEM-focused summer programs for bright high school students from the Capital Region.

These programs are designed to give participants meaningful exposure to modern-day engineering, technology education, and research. We will articulate the impact of STEM on society through engaging lectures by world-class faculty, hands-on activities and group projects, complemented with tours of RPI labs and field trips.

One program in particular we want to highlight is the unique STEAMM Inventor's Studio Program, featuring (primarily) faculty from the School of Engineering. Our Inventor's Studio students have gone on to start many companies, and RPI graduates have founded major companies from Vicarious Visions to NVIDIA, and from Glydeways to Rivian.

Due to space limitations, we will be accepting only 30 outstanding students for this program. The program especially brings high value to rising 10th, 11th, and 12th grade students. We hope you will share this information with any of your students who may be interested. If you have questions, please feel free to contact us at [email protected].

College life, lasting friendships and academic challenge

At Badger Precollege, we create innovative programs for students who want to explore their academic interests, learn more about the college experience and meet new friends. Our programs offer a unique opportunity to help prepare students for academic and social success in high school and college.

We think our programs are great — and our students agree! Here's what a few of them had to say about their summer 2023 experience with Badger Precollege.

"This program really pushed me but in the best way possible. It gave me a chance to come into the field of engineering fully. We had lectures about real engineering topics and got to meet people who love this field. Griffen was also the best teacher I could've asked for! I appreciate Griffen and everyone who made this program such a fun learning experience."
     —Kaitlyn, Engineering Fundamentals and Design

"This program helped me to connect with individuals from all around the world. I was able to be more socially active with new and previous friends. We shared our varied cultures and knowledge with each other."
—Andre, More Than Just a Game: Sports, Media, and Culture

"This program helped me grasp the 'college lifestyle.' I made connections outside my comfort zone and socialized with different groups of people. Academically, my class helped build my critical thinking skills and my research skills."
     —Sophie, Veterinary and Animal Science

Do you have a student who is up for a fresh challenge?

For those who are thinking about a career in communications, enjoy writing or are a visual storyteller, we have just the thing: the Boston University Summer Journalism Academy

Students are challenged to step outside their comfort zone – and experience life as a working journalist. They learned how to interview strangers, ask probing questions, and assemble it in a concise story on deadline.

Our on-campus, residential program for three weeks offers students:
  • Meet with Boston University's representative to discuss the college admissions process,
  • Explore what it's like living in a residence hall and studying in a university environment, and
  • Experience Boston museums, historical sites, and neighborhoods during free time.
Visual storytellers can apply for our three-week in-person photojournalism program where they will learn from former Boston Globe photographer, Stephen Haines.

Skidmore College's The Young Scholars Cell Biology Institute (YSCBI) is a free summer day program incorporating a multi-disciplinary approach to introducing the next generation of students to new fields of biology they may have never considered before. In past years, we have had lectures and labs on topics such as genomics, AI, microscopy, environmental science, neuroscience, biochemistry, and more. The program is segmented into several lectures and labs daily for students to explore their interests, as well as time for counselor coordinated activities, like an Environmental Science walk through Skidmore College’s 150 acres of wooded forest called Northwoods. One of the highlights of the program is allowing students to have hands-on experiences with true high technology, such as confocal, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy, at Skidmore’s Microscopy Imaging Center (SMIC). Other highlights include hands on experiments with experts in the field and a tour of the Tang Teaching Museum. To learn more about what our program entails, please visit our website here and our Instagram account, @young_scholars_cell_bio.

The program runs as a day camp from 8:45 am until 4:45 pm daily from Monday, July 8th until Friday, July 12th, 2024. Students will begin and end their days in Skidmore Microscopy Imaging Center (SMIC) and be picked up at the entrance of the Center for Integrated Sciences (CIS). In order to make this program as accessible as possible to students of all backgrounds, the entire program will be free of charge, including daily free lunches. Students are only responsible for determining transportation to and from campus on their own. This program is primarily for students entering their sophomore or junior year of high school; however, we encourage all high school students to apply. Over the 4 years the YSCBI has been active, we have impacted the lives of over 50 individuals in the Saratoga region. This year, as it is our final year, will be highly selective as we plan to only admit 16 individuals. To increase the likelihood of acceptance, we suggest applying early, as applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Applications close exactly 3 months from today on May 6th, 2024, at 8:00 am.

To apply to the Young Scholars Cell Biology Institute, we request that each student fills out an application and submits a letter of recommendation from a science teacher, an advisor, or a guidance counselor to the program. Applications will only be reviewed once both the application, and the letter of recommendation are received by the YSCBI. The letters of recommendation should be submitted directly from the recommender to Professor Domozych at [email protected] and include a description of why the student should be accepted into the program. The applications will be reviewed by myself, Professor Domozych, and the staff of YSCBI.  Students are also requested to fill out a photo consent form upon acceptance.

January 16: Meet Dr. Aaishatu Glover

At Columbia University, world-class instructors like Dr. Aaishatu Glover draw on their invaluable knowledge, skills, and experience to foster a dynamic educational environment. An educator and community leader, Dr. Glover teaches economics at St. John’s University and also volunteers her time to teach financial literacy to students in grades K-12.

Join one of two online information sessions for a preview of her Columbia Pre-College course: Introduction to Business, Finance and Economics.

The Columbia Experience

As New York State’s first university, rooted in one of the world’s most influential cities, Columbia University embodies both history and progress. As an institution of higher learning, it represents a similar duality: study and experience. Beyond the classroom, special opportunities such as featured lectures and writing workshops expose students to expert knowledge delivered by world-class instructors. Through guided excursions, students can learn firsthand everything New York City has to teach—from the financial market of Wall Street and celebrated productions on Broadway to renowned landmarks and museums.

Columbia University's Pre-College Programs emphasize rigorous instruction and critical thinking within a cohort of students from across the globe. With courses in over a dozen subject areas, ranging from programming and mathematics to psychology and art, students are challenged to think independently and creatively.

Outside of class, students can experience our enriching co-curricular activities, from attending college-prep workshops and lectures to preparing for the academic rigors of university life with sessions like Finding the Right College for You and Insider Tips for the Common App.

"It's really been three weeks of absolute bliss, rigorous academic challenges, and meeting different like-minded people from all across the world—all the while living in the bustling city of New York on one of the most beautiful campuses in the world."

— Susan L. | Surrey, Canada
