DECEMBER 12 (WEDNESDAY) ANNOUNCEMENTS

A big thank you goes out today to all the students who brought in non-perishable food items during the past week to contribute to the Greater Galway Community Christmas Basket Project.  Thank you to the class officers and advisers who went out to purchase items as part of a food scramble challenge.  Over 2,000 items were collected! Also, thank you to members of the wrestling team, basketball team, National Honor Society, National Junior Honor Society and Student Senate  along with  Coach D'Alessandro and Mrs. Peters who helped load the bus, unload the bus, sort and count the non-perishables at the church.  Thank you to Mrs. O'Reilly, Mrs. Britten and the Elementary Student Council for their diligence in collecting and sorting SO MANY items in the elementary.  Well done Eagle Nation!

Congratulations to the varsity teams that received the Scholar Athlete Award this fall! The boys’ cross country team had an average of 95.1. The volleyball team had an average GPA of 95.63. The girls’ soccer team achieved a 95.64 average, while on top, the girls’ varsity cross country team earned a 97.5 GPA! Students with a 90 or above average that played a varsity sport this fall should go to Guidance to get their Scholar Athlete pin. Great job Eagle Nation!

DECEMBER 3 (MONDAY) ANNOUNCEMENTS

Today is the start of National Computer Science Education Week! Computer Science is the study of computers. Not just the computers we see and use all the time either! There are computers in a lot of things: cars, lights, and heating/cooling systems. Even some roads, shoes, and greenhouses use computers.  This year, Galway is promoting Computer Science and Coding in several different ways. One way is by sharing computer science fun facts here on GTV.

  • The first 1GB hard disk drive was announced in 1980 which weighed about 550 pounds, and had a price tag of $40,000. Today, you can store 1GB online for ½ a cent.
  • 68.7% of computer science majors have at least one job offer before graduating university.

Galway is also hosting an Hour of Code event in the HS library this Wednesday, Dec 5 from 6-7:30. This event is open to all of the Galway School Community. Congratulations to Emma Smith and Lindsay Zawisa for being named to the New York State All-State team.  Emma was named to fourth team All-State and Lindsay was named to third team All-State!

The Holiday Food Drive starts Monday and runs to Friday the 14th. The winning class will get money donated to their class fund. Winners will be revealed at the Pep Rally December 20th.  Boxes for donations will be in your English teacher classrooms.

The Poetry Outloud competition for students in grades 9-12 is coming!  Learn two poems included in the Poetry Outloud anthology at poetryoutloud.org and come ready to recite in the library after school on December 6th.  First and second place will win a $50.00 Amazon gift card and have a chance to go to the Regionals in February.  Third and fourth place will win a $25.00 Amazon gift card.  Refreshments will be available to competitors and those who come to applaud and celebrate poetry.

Congratulations to 7th grader Hailey Wilson for winning 3rd place in the Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Hailey won $10 for her poster which illustrated “Kindness Matters.” The other winners were elementary students, Calvin Dopp and Magdalene Maciag. Thank you to all those that participated!

There is a National Honor Society today after school in Mr. Levin’s room. All members should attend.

Picture retakes are today in the library. If you want your picture retaken, please follow the directions on the back of the picture packet you received. If you missed getting your picture taken the first time, you can get an extra form in the main office.

Congratulations to Holden Decker who finished 67th out of 118 runners from across New York State this weekend at Sunken Meadow State Park on Long Island. Holden ran the hilly 5k course in windy 40 degree weather in 19:29. Holden is the first Galway runner to run in the New York State Cross Country Meet since Joe Janack competed about 15 years ago under Coach Prehn. Great job Holden!  

There is a meeting for student drivers after school in the Jr/Sr High School Cafe today. You will discuss parking procedures in the student lot and receive your parking tag.

The varsity cross country team raced in Sectionals at the Saratoga State Park on Friday. Holden Decker placed 5th for Class D and qualified to run at Sunken Meadows on Long Island at the state meet.  Emma Jordan placed 8th and missed going to states by only one place. The girls’ varsity team came in 10th out of 20 schools and the boys’ varsity team came in 6th out of 20 schools. Great job Eagles! And good luck to Holden at the State Meet this Saturday!

A representative from the US Marines will be in Guidance today at 9am. Wednesday we will have an Air Force rep coming in at 9:30. Be sure to sign up for a pass in Guidance.

The seventh annual Galway Community Rocket day is tomorrow at noon at the town fields. You can build your own rocket, or just spend the day outside with your friends to see who will win the golden rocket. The seventh annual Galway Community Rocket day is this Saturday, November 3rd, at the town fields, at noon. You can build your own rocket, or just spend the day outside with your friends to see who will win the golden rocket. If you build it, Mr. Darlington's class will launch it.  This year we have two launchers to battle it out head to head!  Go to http://naturalphilosophers.org/flyrocketfly/ to find directions on how to make your own.

After you watch the rockets fly, grab a friend and head over to Saratoga High School to watch the volleyball team in their semi-final match against Mayfield. The game starts at 3pm, and the team needs your Blue and Gold Spirit there cheering them on, Eagle Nation!

On Tuesday November 6th, the sophomore class is holding a chicken barbecue at the high school. For $12, you can get chicken, potatoes, roll, a drink, and dessert. OCTOBER 29 (MOCHA MONDAY) ANNOUNCEMENTS

Congratulations to the varsity volleyball team who won their quarterfinal game Friday in straight sets over Cambridge! Lindsey Zawisa’s performance in the game put her career total for kills and digs at over 1,000! Emma Smith added 6 kills, 3 blocks, and 8 assists. The girls play tomorrow at Ballston Spa High School at 5pm vs. Hartford in the semi-finals. Go to the game and cheer the team to victory! Go Eagles!

Saturday morning was very cold and very rainy.  However, the varsity and modified cross country teams still participated in Amsterdam's Harvest Invitational at Bob's Trees.  They competed against 10 schools.  The varsity girls and boys placed 5th out of 10 teams.  Emma Jordan and Natalie Zembsch placed in the top 10 in the girls’ race. Holden Decker came in 18th in the boys’ race. James Hilton had a course PR.  The modified girls came in 3rd out of 10 teams.  Emma Mitchell, Danielle Gabri and Abby Gullett all placed in the top 20. They, in addition to Carmen Imbo and Emma Mariani, had a PR on the course.  The modified boys came in 5th.  Rainn McMillan placed in the top 20 and Casey Clark, Carson Eagan, and Rainn had a course PR.    Congrats to the modified on their season finishes.  Good luck to the varsity in their race on Friday. Go Eagles!

OCTOBER 25 (THURSDAY) ANNOUNCEMENTS

Congratulations to the varsity and modified cross country teams!  Galway has 3 WAC League All Stars in the house: Holden Decker, Emma Jordan and Natalie Zembsch! They placed in the top 14 in their races yesterday in Fort Plain, and earned t-shirts announcing their status as WAC League All Stars.  The varsity boys placed 4th out of 10 schools. James Hilton ran strong for the team.   The varsity girls placed 3rd out of 10 schools.  The modified boys placed 4th out 10 schools.   Holden Decker was third overall in the varsity boys’ race. Emma Jordan was 5th overall in the varsity girls’ race.  Rain McMillan took 13th place in the modified boys race and Carson Eagan beat the kid from Berne-Knox-Westerlo that he trades places with at different meets, plus he had a PR. Emma Mitchell took 8th, Abby Gullett came in 9th and Danielle Gabri came in 11th in the modified girls race.  The next meet is at Bob's Trees on Saturday.  Wish the team well. Go Eagles!
