Did you know?  Until 1913, Goalies did not wear different colored shirts from their teammates.

On this date in sports:

  • In 1904, the New York Highlanders' future Baseball HOF pitcher Jack Chesbro's first of 41 wins that season
  • In 1991, the Chicago Blackhawks became the first NHL regular-season champion in 20 years to lose in 1st round of the playoffs (against the Minnesota North Stars).

Today is National Pecan Day!!!!

On this date in history:
  • In 2010, after weeks of small earthquakes and lava flows that signaled an eruption was imminent, Eyjafjallajökull volcano in Iceland began sending a plume of ash into the skies. The plume stretched upward almost 7 miles and then drifted across northern Europe, causing the largest interruption in commercial airline service since World War II.
  • In 1939, John Steinbeck's classic novel The Grapes of Wrath, which was set during the Great Depression and traces the migration of an Oklahoma Dust Bowl family to California and their subsequent hardships as migrant farmworkers, was published.
  • In 1902, American businessman J.C. Penney opened his first dry-goods store, which was in Kemmerer, Wyoming.
  • In 1865, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln was shot by John Wilkes Booth while attending a play at Ford's Theatre in Washington, D.C. He died the next morning.
  • In 1828, Noah Webster published An American Dictionary of the English Language; based on the principle that word usage should evolve from the spoken language, the work was hugely influential, though it was initially attacked for its “Americanism.”
