Fun fact of the day:  Earth’s poles are moving. This magnetic reversal of the North and South Poles has happened 171 times in the past 71 million years. We’re overdue for a flip. It could come soon, as the North Pole is moving at around 55 kilometres per year, an increase over the 15km per year up until 1990.

Did you know? The Pittsburgh Steelers, Pirates, and Penguins all share the same color uniforms. It is the only city where the major sports teams all share the same flair, black and gold.

On this date in sports:
  • In 1904, Cy Young pitched the first perfect game in "modern" baseball as the Boston Americans beat the Philadelphia Athletics, 3-0.
  • In 1907,  at the 34th Kentucky Derby, Arthur Pickens, aboard a 66-1 chance Stone Street, won in muddy track conditions; 2:15.20, the slowest Derby in history
  • In 1922, after sharing the Polo Grounds with the New York Giants for 10 years, construction began on Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, NYC
  • In 1973, American racehorse Secretariat won the Kentucky Derby en route to capturing the U.S. Triple Crown, which also includes the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes.
  • In 1995, the last basketball game at Boston Garden was played as the Celtics were eliminated from the playoffs.

  • In 1945, while on a picnic on Gearhart Mountain, Oregon, six people were killed after a Japanese balloon bomb exploded; they were the only deaths by enemy action to occur in the continental United States during World War II.
  • In 1931, gunfire broke out during a strike by coal miners in Harlan County, Kentucky, leaving four dead in what came to be known as the Battle of Evarts. Conflict between workers and mining companies continued throughout the 1930s, resulting in the area becoming known as Bloody Harlan.
  • In 1862,  Mexico repelled the French forces of Napoleon III at the Battle of Puebla, a victory that became a symbol of resistance to foreign domination and is now celebrated as a national holiday, Cinco de Mayo.
