Girls Soccer Highlights

In a dramatic opening round of the Class C Sectional Tournament, the #11 seed Galway Girls Varsity Soccer Team pulled off a major postseason upset, defeating the #6 seed Greenville Spartans 2-1 on their home turf. From the opening whistle, the Golden Eagles knew they had a battle on their hands. The first half was a masterclass in defensive resilience, as Galway held an offensively potent Greenville squad completely scoreless. Defenders Kaylee Jessop and Olivia Davison-Gauss took on the formidable assignment of neutralizing Greenville’s top scorer, Anna Motta. Meanwhile, the defensive tandem of Nadia LaBate and goalkeeper Lily Bain denied every central threat, heavily contesting and turning away every shot to take a 0-0 stalemate into halftime. With 40 minutes remaining and their season on the line, both teams raised the intensity in the second half. Twenty minutes in, Greenville finally broke the deadlock when Motta struck a stunning free kick into the top corner from 35 yards out, putting the Spartans ahead 1-0. Down a goal, Galway responded with fearless determination. Moving LaBate up to striker on the restart, the Golden Eagles executed an immediate "Hail Mary" attack. Off the kickoff, LaBate laid the ball off to Mae Budris, who launched a full-send ball deep downfield. LaBate outpaced Greenville’s back line and tucked the ball past keeper Isabelle Hunter-equalizing the game just eight seconds after Greenville’s goal. With the game tied 1-1 and under five minutes remaining, Galway struck again. Davison-Gauss sent a precision long ball upfield to Norah Schaperjahn, who battled through a wall of Spartan defenders. As Hunter stepped out to make a play, Schaperjahn collided with the keeper, knocking the ball loose. In a pure test of grit and willpower, Schaperjahn scrambled to her feet first and slotted home the game-winning goal with four minutes to play, putting Galway up 2-1. Senior and Rookie Keeper Lily Bain was absolutely clutch, making big play after big play. She tallied 13 saves on the night, bringing her season total to 172. The Golden Eagles held strong through the final whistle to secure the victory and eliminate the #6 seed from sectionals. It was a complete team effort, with key players rising to the occasion in crucial moments to get the job done. With the victory, Galway advances to the Sectional Quarterfinals for the first time since 2023. The Golden Eagles will look to keep their postseason momentum alive as they travel to face #3 seed Schoharie on Saturday evening for a chance at a semifinal spot.
